The Second Law of Hair-o-Dynamics

Essay By KAT CAVERLY
No matter what you do to hair it grows back. I think this is an amazing thing!
Four weeks ago I cut off all of my dreadies and shaved my head. This was the most dramatic thing I have ever done to my hair; the UN-do. And I have done alot of things to my hair.
I've cut it in different shapes, let it grow and not cut it at all; I've permed it, dyed it, bleached it, ratted it into a bouffant, made it white, red, black, various shades of blonde and platinum. My hair has been a gray color, beige, piebald. I was born with shoulder length black hair; had what was called dishwater blonde until I was 10. And my natural color is brunette with a slight wave and lots and lots of cowlicks. And when you bleach brunette hair you realize how much red is in it naturally.
I have had my hair very short before (2 inches) and very long where I could sit on it. But shaving my head is the most radical thing I have done, second only to the dreadlocks. It shook me up for the first week. And my head was very cold without hair. But now, I have hair again albeit very very short.
I won't have normal short hair again until Christmas but at this extreme length it is so very soft and fun to touch. My husband rubs my head and says "I wish I had a watermelon I wish I had a watermelon..."
I am already wondering, what will I do next with my hair? I think I have done it all, except see it go white, which I have dreamt of since I was a very little girl. My grandmother had blue hair (white hair with VO-5 blue) and I was fascinated by it. I don't want to color my hair in hopes of seeing the white. I think I am the only one I know that really wants white hair.
Then I can make it blue!

Wow. That sounds awesome. My mom has this pretty silver color to her grey hair (like metal silver) but she absolutely hates it. She started with the grey when she was in her mid-20s and I really hope to recieve that color too...
I really like unique hair colors and styles. In high school I drempt of dying it purple but it was forbidden in my school.
Please continue!

Hi, long time after you posted this entry, but I need to let you know, my lil sis (10 years younger than me) is one who started to talk about wanting to get grey hair when she was in grade three. We tried to bleach it to white, but as with your hair, it turned out to contain too much red to be bleached out.
Her matural hair colour is a slightly ashy dark hazel and she has it at slightly under an inch right now, hating the sweaty neck in warmer weather.
I stumbled upon your blog because of the dredies, and I guess this is what I will do next :-)
Greetings from Germany, nana.

Hallo Nana!
I love your sister's story. It is so good to hear that someone else is out there, like me, who really appreciates white hair! It is stunning!
Right now my hair has two inches of natural growth, with two inches of bleached blonde on the tips and I get more compliments and curiosity about how I did it!
What to do next?? I am beginning to get ready for public appearances, and performing in character again, so I wear wigs. And short short hair is great if you wear wigs!

Hi!
You are the only other person I have ever heard of who is looking forward to seeing thier hair white - I can't wait either!! Everyone thinks i'm nuts.
I too have played with my hair but not as much as you.
I am currently shaggy short haired but am going have it all buzzed off. I would really like to see my scalp but am not quite that brave as I work somewhere where they would sack me (coz they don't care about equality and DIVERSITY as much as they say they do!)
So I am about to do the most drastic thing i've ever done to my hair - have it at the longest grade possible. I have no idea what it will look like (its not deep and dark coloured like in your pic, it's brown, mid with red and blonde bits in the right light) I was looking for pictures of what a grade 10 or 12 looks like when I found your blog - and i'm glad I did.
I think you're awesome.
And its nice not to be alone in my white hair dreams!

dear Laura,
short hair is fabulous, but for certain types of "public appearances" you might have to wear make-up and then it is quite a fashion statement.
Hair is an amazing thing; and it grows back for more!!

Ahh, yes!
You are not alone in enjoying 'less is more', having had lengths reaching below my waist and every style above that, or the want for white...this is the third time in 10 years I've shaved mine down to 1/8th with the clippers, just got tired of "normal".
At 40, my husband has warned me that I'm getting too old for this...
Now I am torn between bleaching it or letting it grow-in "gray", still less than half of it being translucent.
I anxiously look forward to having completely white hair, but I think I have a few years yet before nature grants me this wish.

Just getting tired of "normal"; I know what you mean!! I don't even own a hair brush, using my hands to "style" my hair, even when it was long.
I am not that patient to want to spend hours in the salon either, so now that my hair has grown out, with the stupid blonde tips that everyone seems to like, I am reticent to do highlights and will never bleach my hair again. Never!
I guess I am ready for another change!
